I’ve discovered among my musician, v.o., audio engineer, video game developer and some other creative friends that we can fall into 2 camps, those who love plug-ins and must have more and more or those who don’t really care one way or the other.
A company from Croatia named Little Endian has come up with a plug-in called SpectrumWorx that should actually be of interest to both camps. If you want to skip the rest of this and hop over there and grab a free demo download, click this link http://www.littleendian.com/shop/.
Some of the features in the demo are disabled and it will blank out whatever effect you are applying every 20 seconds or so, but it’s still pretty cool for purposes of checking things out. The plug-in is VST and works on almost any flavor of Windows or MAC OS 10.5+. And what’s really cool is it’s only $119 for either MAC or PC or $149 for both.
So, what the heck is it? Well to me, it’s more of a tool for exploration and creation. There are tons of presets to get you started and then a myriad of tweaks and knobs and buttons to go off in any one of a bunch of directions. There’s all kinds of pitch shifting and autotune controls. There are vocoders and time pitchers and a bunch of things I can’t even really describe.
I can guarantee that more than one of you will miss dinner getting hooked on this thing. For anyone who needs to do creature sounds, make people sound like robots or otherwise impale, implode or just mess up speech, this thing is like a deluxe Lego set. I was pushing a few buttons and got myself to sound like one of those Cylons from Battlestar Galactica. A few button pushes later and I sounded like one of those Green Sirens that wooed Dr. Smith on that Lost in Space Episode.
There are also ways to use thing a bit more conventionally as a compressor for example, but why would you want to, when you could do all this other cool stuff.
